Almost all Democratic politicians seem to be blindly pro-Israeli - even if a lot of their base sees both sides of the issue (that is to say that both sides are deeply in the wrong).

The Harris campaign called the comments "unfortunate."

It is an ugly talking point used by the right wing.  It is a term meant to cause hurt, and it should not be used against Democrats.

on Dean's part.  The Republicans shoved the idea of a free, peaceful, prosperous Democratic Iraq down our throats for years.

Dean is putting them in a catch-22 by saying that a Democratically elected Iraq is just as much a threat to Israel as Iraq ever was--thereby eliminating the lone chief ratioale for continued presence in Iraq.

And it's good politics at home because most Americans do indeed support Israel and oppose our venture in Iraq.

The corner Dean is painting them into is getting increasingly smaller. Crazy like a fox, Dean is.

In September 2003, Dean was under fire from all sides (including Lieberman and Pelosi) for having said that he thought the US should take an "even-handed" approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and that members of Hamas were "soldiers."  He also said that "enormous" numbers of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories would have to be dismantled.

but there is no question Dean said what he said, and  that's the point.  I happen to think Israel should back off, but that doesn't make me an anti-semite.  Unless, evidently, I'm conversing with Dean.  (and a few kossacks, too).  

I think Dean screwed up here.    This is the same logic that the Repubs use against us re: the war.  Since we are against the war, we don't support the troops.  And we all know that's BS.  This is BS, too.  

i've said it before- this internecine i/p war among liberals is karl rove's dream. on this blog, of late, there has been far more energy spent on this topic than any other, and it is FAR from being the most important issue! while we war on each other about the war in lebanon, we are ignoring the many many issues on which we largely agree- and which the republicans know we can beat them on. what's happening in lebanon matters a LOT, but is it more important than global warming, iraq, afghanistan, and bush's creeping fascism and creeping theocracy? is it more important than elise's diary about sunset clauses, or hekebolos's diaries about bush's war on women? every time an i/p diary goes up, and the usual suspects (myself included, at times) make their usual rants, we are losing ground- and this troll knows it!

I'm not even sure he'd deny it, at least not in an unguarded moment. He's a dyed in the wool Shiite nationalist, of the Iranian school. I'm pretty sure he'd be proud to agree that Israel needs to be erased from the map.

al-Maliki is very most likely an anti-semite and, in any case, even if he wasn't one, he'd have to pretend to be in order to both be leader of Irak and stay alive.

I can just imagine his welcome home if he were to say something overty critical of either Hezbollah or Hamas during his visit to the imperial palace on Pennsylvania street.

Buy a clue, folks. The Dawa party is in hock to Sadr. Sadr loves Hezbollah. If Maliki was to do something as braindead as condemn them, he would probably collapse the government and be forced into exile in the US.

And NONE of them likes Israel. Not Sadr, SCIRI or any of the other non-Kurd parties in the parliment.

Anti-semitism is alive and well in Iraq. So to think our puppet can condemn the friends of his backer is well, insane. If he were to recognize the right of Israel to exist, his life would be worth less than a mafia snitch. Too many people think that these guys have to play by our rules. They don't and can't if they want to live.

All this being said, it seems to me that this is a relatively cost-effective way to underline yet again how contradictory GOP and neo-con aims were and continue to be when it comes to everything from foreign policy to the economy in passing by Irak.

Foolish sounding? You bet, to you and I. But we ain't the target audience. You can bank on that.

This being said, I have to say I'm still waiting for the Dem leadership to start talking to my demographic. And I suspect Dean would like to be talking to us, but the strategy book sez hold off for now. So he probably has to be on his meds, cuz I think Howard gets this stuff too, and hates having to spew bullshit for strategic purposes.

He's part of the shiite majority in Iraq thats trying to takeover the country and turn it into an Islamic theocracy. Islam and sharia law is written into the Constitution. And theyre (fundie shiites) the overwhelming majority anyhow so what should they care if theres voting. Saddam held elections too.

I feel like we just got conned by this guy Maliki. He came over here and essentially asked for more help to win the war when "winning the war" means helping him create another Islamic theocracy like Iran. Iran is very anti-semitic and so will be shiite Iraq.

Thats Dean's point, thats what he's warning about. But republicans are so blinded by 'winning' and by 'democracy', and democrats are so blinded by just wanting the war to end, that nobody mentions that. I hope Dean continues to speak out about this. I dont know that theres anything that can be done about it now, but its something people need to understand.

all hell broke loose, if you remember at the beginning of his campaign, there were problems in the middle east and he said that we had to be honest brokers and the DLC went bananas, the press skewered him, and he was acused of being a traitor, anti-semite (even though his wife is Jewish)... so it is no wonder.

I was there, and his speech was great, and was well received by the "establishment democrats"  he had to say it... isn't politics always demeaning. I'd rather have him than anyone else at the head of the party. He has to play ball or else he is toast!  You cannot speak the truth... people cannot handle the truth!

I wish people who hated this site would have the basic willpower to keep the hell away from it. It really isn't too difficult.
